For its outlandish party reputation, Miami can sometimes throw a party for a good cause, as is this case with one of their most prolific gay-friendly events, the annual White Party Week in Miami.
With all its decadence, the White Party came from humble roots. In 1985 the HIV/AIDS epidemic was in full swing, and the Health Crisis Network was a non-profit in Dade County looking for fundraising to help fight the disease and support new treatments. According to the White Party site, the organization recruited local successful gay businessman Frank Wager to help conceptualize the fundraiser. Taking the request and running with it, Frank came up with the White Party. The decadence and upscale nature of his project brought it to the Villa Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami.
Today, White Party Week consists of several events spread out over six days across different venues. In addition to all of the different happenings in the Greater Miami Area (within driving distance of Winter Haven) the White Party will also come through Miami Beach. The Muscle Beach event in Miami Beach is known as one of the best times of the year and a favorite during White Party Week.
Health Crisis Network has since merged with another nonprofit to become Care Resource, who is now the beneficiary of White Party Week. Having played a major role in the evolution of HIV/AIDS health care, Care Resource continues to use profits from White Party Week to help push the search for a cure while funding other humanitarian ventures. So, while all of those people are dancing around Miami and Miami Beach this November 26 to December 1, they can also enjoy the fact that they’re giving back.
